Dear Sunnyside Students and Families,
Welcome to the 2018 – 2019 school year! It is always exciting to start a new school year with so much opportunity ahead. Our focus at Sunnyside will be to continue strong learning and attain high goals for our students’ success. Students will be engaged in rigorous lessons that will facilitate high levels of thinking and conceptualization across all areas of the curriculum. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities will be incorporated into daily lessons as our teachers are learning new ways to excite and motivate our students in these areas. Academic discourse, where students articulate their knowledge and build on each other’s ideas, will continue to strengthen our students’ ability to work together and collaborate. Technology in our classrooms is used as a tool for learning as our students work to increase their skills in the 21st Century.
Our teachers plan and collaborate regularly to facilitate effective instruction across subject areas and within grade level and school teams. Students at Sunnyside learn and practice strong character traits and scholarly habits that contribute to their individual success and our positive school climate. We are very proud of each one of the areas that makes our school a great place to learn and grow. All members of the Sunnyside community (students, parents, teachers, and staff) have an important role to play in the academic and emotional success of our students and school. The year ahead promises to be rewarding as we work together for our students!
We look forward to returning to the important work of teaching and learning and also meeting our newest Sunnyside members. Parent Opportunities: We welcome families and parents to be involved at Sunnyside. We have an active PTA with monthly meetings and activities. Our PTA supports fun school activities where families are welcome to participate and support our students, such as, fundraising events, learning events, social events, and more. Parents are also invited to be well informed and contribute to school decisions on our School Site Council and English Language Advisory Committee which meets every other month. The principal invites parents for opportunities to learn about our school at Pastries with Parents meetings. She shares topics of interest and information about our school. Family Education opportunities are provided to our families as a means for sharing ideas and strategies to support our students through opportunities to learn together.
Sunnyside PTA – Our PTA meets monthly on the second Thursday of every month at 2:45 in our MPR. Our meetings are led by our PTA President Maria McCormack and all of our families, including students are welcome. The time is spent sharing successes and planning for future events. Our focus this year has been fundraising for our new playground.
