Dear Sunnyside Students and Families,
Welcome to the 2019 – 2020 school year! Here we are at the beginning of a brand new year with some very exciting things ahead. If you are new to Sunnyside, we want you to know that you are part of an amazing school that focuses on rigorous academics, technology, social emotional well-being, and goal setting for future success. We warmly welcome you to our team!
This year at Sunnyside, we are extremely excited to embrace our new one to one iPad program. We had the unique opportunity to purchase brand new iPads for every student. Teachers will be utilizing teacher and student iPads to enrich, enhance, and extend learning opportunities for our students. Our focus will be to develop creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills in alignment with 21st Century learning. Sunnyside teachers will have professional development opportunities and will work together to design lessons with the support of two other schools, K – 6 Instruction, and our Technology Instruction team. The focus will be to develop meaningful activities that facilitate high levels of learning in technology rich classrooms. We will also be implementing our newly district adopted Social Studies Program, TCI. This is an online program that teaches students about the world around them and how our cultures were created through interesting and engaging lessons that support great discussions and high levels of thought. Math instruction will continue to provide our students with rigorous mathematical activities through our Pearson text and UCI math lessons. Students will be presented with challenging problem-solving activities and be encouraged to take risks as they go deeper in their understanding of grade level math concepts. Students will continue to progress in their reading skills and fluency through our Houghton Mifflin reading program. This program engages readers with interesting text at all reading levels. Our teachers and staff also support students in developing scholarly habits and strong character traits. We look forward to sharing great successes in the year ahead. Please join us in the journey!
Back to School Night will provide you with more information about our programs and policies and a chance for you to meet your child’s teacher. This is also a great community event which will allow our families to connect, reconnect and reacquaint.
Please look for me and introduce yourself during any one of our back to school events. I have planned our first “Pastries with Parents” for Thursday, September 20th at 8:30 AM. Our PTA supports fun school activities where families are welcome to participate and support our students, such as, fundraising events, learning events, social events, and more. Parents are also invited to be well informed and contribute to school decisions on our School Site Council and English Language Advisory Committee which meets every other month. The principal invites parents for opportunities to learn about our school at Pastries with Parents meetings. She shares topics of interest and information about our school. Family Education opportunities are provided to our families as a means for sharing ideas and strategies to support our students through opportunities to learn together.
